Shibui is my punk rock band based in Hanoi, Vietnam. The band is made up of Ian (JPN) on the sticks, Jack (UK) on guitar and myself on bass. Jack and I share vocal duties. We formed around September 2018, and wrote our first song during our first ever practice. We built up a bit of momentum in the tiny but close-knit Vietnamese punk rock scene, even doing a mini tour in the country until Covid restrictions forced music venues in the capital and the country at large to close.
We spent a long time recording our album but lost the master recording files when I had to factory reset my laptop and so the final album - released in 2022 after 3 years of being a band - features the instrumentals we could recover. We recorded the vocals by sticking a duvet behind a microphone in my wardrobe and shouting into it. My neighbours must've been confused.
Highlights of the band (apart from forming a wicked brotherhood with my bandmates) include supporting the awesome Of Virtue, being featured in a Japanese alternative mag, playing in a forest as part of a festival line-up and being banned by the VN authorities from playing open-air at Hoan Kiem lake due to the potential of "starting a riot".
